Position Summary

The Department of Emergency Medicine at Indiana University School of Medicine seeks qualified candidates for an Assistant/Associate Research Scientist.

The emergency medicine research core is comprised of three laboratories in the VanNuys Medical Sciences Bldg. (Facility and equipment information is available upon request to qualified applicants.) Work generally includes analysis of blood and tissues from a rat model of acute and chronic pulmonary embolism (PE); the study of blood samples from humans with PE with an emphasis on understanding mechanisms and treatment of apoptosis in platelets; and in-vitro models of clot lysis using nanoparticle mediated direct fibrinolysis with a recombinant-produced, truncated version of plasmin.

We seek to test if acute PE activates and damages platelets, and if PE depletes nitric oxide availability to the lung vasculature, and how this occurs. This project requires working with blood from humans and animals. The successful applicant will:
• Assist in completing experiments described in the “Ancillary project” of NIH Award UM HL113203.
• Be knowledgeable of the connection between a clinical registry of patients with pulmonary embolism and laboratory analysis to better understand the transition between acute PE and post-PE syndrome/chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension.
• Be knowledgeable of REDcap and capable of accurately entering and maintaining records.
• Receive blood and assist or perform tasks such as labeling samples, centrifugation, aliquotting and storing plasma, serum and buffy coat samples.
• Learn how to operate and perform analyses with the TEG 5000, the Simple Wes system, the STA compact coagulation machine, and the Oroboros respirometer, including travel, if necessary to another laboratory (expenses paid).
• Isolate and study metabolism from fresh platelets obtained from patients and healthy volunteers.
• Assist with sample transfer for mass spectrometry analysis of dimethylarginine, and amino acid quantification.
• Complete ELISA assays, including cGMP measurements per protocol.

Additionally, there will be a basic science opportunity to explore targeted and non-targeted nanoparticle based fibrinolytics as potential clinical tools for treating PE.
• This work will require diverse types of chemical synthesis (organic chemistry and peptide synthesis), purification (reverse phase HPLC and FPLC), and analytical chemistry techniques to create and characterize the particles.
• Synthesized particles will be tested in various in vitro/in vivo and biophysical assays that will be developed to assess efficacy.
• Experience with bacterial expression and purification of recombinant proteins is a plus.

The research scientist will also
• Write, submit and publish scientific manuscripts
• Write and submit grants as coinvestigator and principal investigator

Strong communication skills, including speaking and writing in English, walking across campus, riding the Peoplemover, attending meetings, and attention to detail are requirements.

Basic Qualifications

The qualified applicant will have a doctoral degree (MD, PhD or equivalent) and at least 4 years of research experience with a focus on physiology, hematology, biochemistry, or chemical engineering with the desire to develop and learn new techniques.
