Title Postdoctoral Fellow
Specific Title
Appointment Type Postdoctoral Fellow
Department IUSM - Biochemistry & Molecular Biology
Campus IU School of Medicine Bloomington
Position Summary

The overwhelming majority of deaths from solid tumors are attributable to metastasis, or the spread of cancer cells to tissues away from the primary tumor. Furthermore, patients with metastatic cancer have very limited therapeutic options. We discovered a role for the transcription factor heat shock factor 1 (HSF1) in epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT), cancer stem cells, and an association with metastasis-free survival (Carpenter et al., Oncogene 34:546, 2015; Carpenter et al., Oncotarget 8:73947, 2017). We are seeking to employ a post-doctoral researcher to explore HSF1 and other transcription factors in the progression and metastasis of solid tumors. We work on both the upstream signaling mechanisms regulating transcription factor activity as well as the downstream gene expression programs affected. Thus, we use techniques from animal models (nude mice xenografts, immune-competent syngeneic) to wet lab biochemistry (western blot, qPCR, luciferase, etc.) as well as computational bioinformatics (RNA-seq, ChIP-seq, etc.). Indiana University is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Institution M/F/D/V.

Basic Qualifications

Applicants should have a PhD and/or MD with strong laboratory and analytical skills. Experience with laboratory animals, molecular biology techniques, immunology, or bioinformatics is desirable, but the ability to work independently to produce high-quality data and being an organized and enthusiastic scientist are most important.

Department Contact for Questions

Interested applicants should send a 1-page summary of past research accomplishments and future goals, curriculum vitae and contact information for at least three references to Richard Carpenter (richcarp@iu.edu).
