Position Summary

Join the faculty of a vibrant, multidisciplinary and growing academic Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences at the Indiana University Fairbanks School of Public Health, Indianapolis Campus. The Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences is recruiting a highly motivated behavioral scientist for a tenure track position. Applicants must demonstrate a commitment to conducting state-of-the art impact-focused public health research, teaching undergraduate and/or graduate public health, mentoring students, and serving both the academic and lay communities.

We are looking for faculty who are interested in working in a collaborative environment and who will expand departmental research areas. Some examples of faculty research areas include but are not limited to health disparities, social determinants, health communication, implementation science, behavioral health, and community engagement.

The Fairbanks School of Public Health, established in 2012, is fully accredited by CEPH and offers four doctoral degree programs, four master’s degree programs, and three bachelor’s degree programs. The Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences oversees the BSPH in Community Health and Social and Behavioral Concentration of the MPH program.

SBS is a department dedicated to work that positively impacts the health and well-being of individuals, families and neighborhoods. Some examples of current faculty research areas include but are not limited to behavioral health, community engagement, health communication, health disparities, implementation science, and social determinants. We currently focus on issues related to addictions and substance abuse, stress, diabetes, and maternal and child health through our departmental research arm, the Center for Community Health Engagement and Equity Research (CHEER).

The Department has extensive, well-established collaborations with schools and centers across our campus, as well as in the surrounding community. Especially strong research and educational collaborations are present with the schools of Art, Education, Liberal Arts, Medicine, Nursing, and Science.

Our institution is dedicated to diversity and is one of only 18 universities nationwide to be recognized as the recipient of the prestigious Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award from Insight Into Diversity (the nation’s oldest diversity higher education publication) for five consecutive years. The Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences is looking for scholars who will contribute to our commitment to prepare our graduates to enter and lead in a diverse and complex world.

FSPH is is located on the IUPUI campus in Indianapolis. IUPUI is a unique urban campus that is a merger of two high ranking universities, Indiana University and Purdue University. Other resources on the IUPUI campus contribute to our success in research including the IU Simon Cancer Center, the Indiana Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute (ICTSI), and Regenstrief Institute, Inc. The faculty and staff of the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences have particularly strong ties to the campus-level infrastructure that supports community engagement, including the IUPUI Center for Service and Learning, IUPUI Office of Community Engagement and the ICTSI Community Health Partnership (CHeP) Program.

IUPUI is located within walking distance to the State Capitol building. Known as the “Crossroads of America,” Indianapolis, the country’s 15th largest city, is a thriving economic and cultural metropolis. It is large enough to play host to the Indianapolis 500 (the largest single-day sporting event in the world) and Super Bowl, but small enough to personify small-town charm. The city and surrounding areas offer an exceptionally high quality of life including access to museums, cultural districts, excellent dining, professional sporting events, and historic sites. Indianapolis offers A-rated schools in both its central urban areas (public and private), as well as in surrounding suburban neighborhoods. Several suburbs are regularly voted “best places to live in America” by various national news sources. Residents enjoy a relatively low cost of living, safe neighborhoods, easy commutes, access to an award-winning International Airport, and emerging eco-friendly options such as downtown bike shares and electronic car rental.

We are committed to building a diverse faculty and encourage women and minority candidates to apply.
