Position Summary

The Indiana University School of Informatics and Computing (SoIC) at the Indianapolis campus invites applications for a tenured associate or full professor in the growing field of data science (or related area) to fill the position of Associate Dean for Research. Candidates must demonstrate an outstanding scholarly record of research, exhibited by high-impact peer-reviewed publications, a forward-looking, vigorous research agenda and a demonstrated history of securing significant, competitive external funding.

An exceptional researcher is sought to lead and expand the research enterprise of our school and contribute to the department’s growing data science academic program. All areas of data science will be considered including data mining, statistical machine learning, descriptive, predictive, and prescriptive analytics, cloud computing, distributed databases, high performance computing, data visualization, or other areas involving the collection, organization, management, and extraction of knowledge from massive, complex, heterogeneous datasets. Data may include text, images, video, sensor and instrument data, clickstream data, social media interactions, neuroimaging data, genomics, proteomics, or metabolomics data, and so on.

Responsibilities: The overarching responsibility is to expand the research portfolio of the SoIC. In addition, the Associate Dean will be expected to:

  • Develop, implement and monitor the SoIC’s strategic plan in advancing and developing research and research infrastructure
  • Provide strategic guidance in identifying and communicating opportunities for funding.
  • Provide leadership to the research staff across the School and supporting mentorship in research for junior faculty within the SoIC
  • Develop internal grant and pre-review mechanisms to ensure the strongest possible proposals are submitted for review
  • Negotiate and ensure adequacy of research facilities
  • Promote engagement in interdisciplinary research across the faculty and externally with other individuals, organizations, and relevant stakeholders
  • Explore opportunities for involving undergrad, graduate and doctoral students in ongoing research, including graduate research assistantships
  • Connect with the community to involve them in the research process
  • Identify, create and lead high-impact, school-wide and interdisciplinary research initiatives that raise the visibility and impact of SoIC at state and national levels.
  • Develop and implement strategies to promote dissemination of SoIC research at local, University and national conferences and meetings
  • Work collaboratively with other SoIC leadership to establish and maintain national and international recognition as a leader in research and knowledge transfer
  • Assess the school’s research activities, processes and infrastructure and implement improvements, as needed
  • Assist the Executive Associate Dean with other duties as assigned
Basic Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in Computer Science, Information Science, Statistics, Data Science or related discipline.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop a record of outstanding research productivity and impact.
  • Demonstrated ability to secure significant external funding is required.
  • Effective teaching for classroom, online, or blended learning.
