Position Summary

Indiana University School of Medicine is seeking a visionary leader to serve as the inaugural Executive Director of the Vera Bradley Foundation Center for Breast Cancer Research. This scientific leadership opportunity will have the resources and support to propel forward the school’s investigation of breast cancer. The Center is conceptualized to bring together all existing clinical and research activities in the area of breast cancer under one umbrella and have the following programs:
Clinical and research programs:
• The Genomics Medicine program will optimize outcomes for breast cancer patients by analyzing the full array of -omics of each patient and their tumor and identify treatments that better target the individual’s cancer while minimizing side effects
• The Basic Science program will conduct laboratory research to uncover how breast cancers grow, evade natural defenses and overcome treatments. Identifies potential novel targets for treatment
• The Therapeutics program will test new drugs, new combinations of drugs, next-generation therapies for patients with treatment-resistant breast cancer and leads national trials with broad implications
• The Data Science Program will manage large data sets including genomic sequencing and electronic heath records, along with information about the environment, lifestyle and other factors, to inform patient care
• The Health Disparity Program will focus on identifying and addressing issues of health disparity in incidence, treatment effects and outcome.
• The Education and Training Program will create unique educational and training opportunities for physicians, scientists and patients. The Vera Bradley Scholars program will fall under the umbrella of this team

Ample resources for collaboration and research, including:
• Exceptionally well supported Center, including annual support of $1.5-2 million
• A large endowed chair of $5 million from the Vera Bradley Foundation with a $5 million Presidential Match
• Funds to recruit 2-3 senior to mid-level physician and/or research scientists
• Prominent space for the Center and its recruits on highly visible, soon to be remodeled, floor of the Walther Hall research building Komen Tissue Bank, the only repository in the world for normal breast tissue and matched serum, plasma and DNA
• IU Simon Cancer Center, an NCI designated Cancer Center with more than 200 investigators who lead over 600 clinical trials for adult and pediatric cancers
• IU School of Medicine’s Precision Health Initiative, a $120 million investment to place Indiana University at the cutting edge of healthcare
• Indiana University Health’s statewide network of 15 hospitals
• The Indiana Collaborative Initiative for Talent Enrichment (INCITE), a partnership between IU School of Medicine and local, non-academic partners such as the Indiana Biosciences Research Institute, Eli Lilly and Co., Roche, Dow, Cook, BioCrossroads, IU Health and Eskenazi Health to attract top scientists

Basic Qualifications

• MD, PhD, MD/PhD, or equivalent
• Eligibility for licensure in Indiana
• A passion to improve treatments in breast cancer (e.g., triple negative breast cancer)
• A nationally recognized, extramurally funded research program in breast cancer, cancer biology, cancer genomics, or cancer immunotherapy
• Strong publication record and national reputation in breast cancer research
• Progressive leadership experience in academic medicine
• Academic credentials appropriate for an appointment with tenure
