Position Summary

The Indiana University School of Education at IUPUI in Indianapolis is seeking a clinical track assistant professor of elementary literacy education with strengths in teaching and scholarship of teaching that are grounded in sociocultural perspectives of literacies.

The School of Education at IUPUI is as an urban serving institution located in the heart of Indianapolis. Our school of education has approximately 40 full time faculty all of whom are actively engaged in teaching, scholarship of teaching, and research that focuses on social justice and anti-racist practices, partnerships with urban communities and schools, and critical perspectives in education.

Faculty in our teacher education programs are committed to preparing teachers to enact transformative practices in urban schools, to participate in field based experiences that support our teacher candidates, and to contribute to the goal of diversifying the teacher workforce. Our elementary program is specifically designed to engage in partnerships with urban elementary schools where clinical faculty, including the person considered for this position, engage in establishing and maintaining these partnerships.

• Design and implement literacy curriculum that grounds pre-service teachers in deep understanding of literacy work that foregrounds issues of race, class, and gender.
• Transform literacy practices that marginalize, devalue, and silence students whose language and literacy practices are viewed as deficient.
• Lead mutually beneficial partnerships with local schools. Leadership includes mentoring, professional development, and support of student teacher candidates and in-service teachers along with community partnerships with families.
• Support and design of field experiences for student teacher candidates. Support and design includes the potential to work with student teacher candidates over the course of their four semester program in which they engage in increasingly sophisticated enactments of teaching that values students’ linguistic practices in and out of school.
• Conduct scholarship around teaching in various formats: presentations, professional development, publications, public comment, etc.
• Mentor and advise students in our teacher education program
• Provide service to department, university, community, and professional organizations.
• Promotion and long term contract expected after the fifth year with IUPUI. This process is focused on excellence in teaching.

Basic Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
• Earned doctorate in education with preparation in elementary teacher education and a focus on literacy education.
• Expertise teaching in PreK-8 public schools, preferably in urban public schools.
• Critical pedagogy and scholarship addressing issues of power, privilege and empowerment and the ways these issues affect children and communities.
• Capacity to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in elementary reading and literacy methods and literacy education.
• Evidence of commitment in the areas of inclusion, social justice, innovation in working with schools, organizations, and colleagues.
