Position Summary

The Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies at Indiana University, Bloomington seeks to fill a full-time associate director position to begin as soon as possible. Founded in 1963, Indiana University’s Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CLACS) serves as an umbrella organization uniting Latin Americanists from all campuses of Indiana University (IU). CLACS, as part of the School of Global and International Studies at IU, is a pivotal site for research, instruction, and outreach focused on Latin America and the Caribbean, sponsoring a wide range of lectures, conferences, and events highlighting aspects of the region’s cultures, societies, and languages. CLACS Provides interdisciplinary academic programs in Latin American and Caribbean Studies to students preparing for careers in research, teaching, or management. CLACS offers an undergraduate minor and area certificate, a Master’s Degree, three-year Dual Master’s Degree programs, and a Doctoral minor and certificate.

Duties:
- Serves as principal grant writer and coordinator for CLACS, collaborating with Director and staff in writing proposals, managing project data collection and administering awards.
- Provides collaborative leadership in planning, developing, and implementing the center’s academic, pedagogical, and outreach activities, including curriculum and program design, and student application reviews.
- Oversees admissions processes to the center M.A. program and fellowship competitions, addresses student inquiries regarding eligibility and proposal preparation.
- Assists Director and Academic Secretary with advising graduate students regarding degree progress and academic policy.
- Oversees staff administration for Center, including timesheet approvals, hourly employee supervision and hiring, and Graduate Assistant (GA) supervision and orientation.
- Serves as instructor for one course per year in the center from the CLACS Schedule of Classes.
- Oversees development and maintenance of Center website and social media accounts.
- Oversees communications with current alumni and donors, working to deepen relationships and broaden CLACS alumni relations.

Basic Qualifications

Required: Master’s Degree or higher (PhD preferred) with Latin American focus; native/near-native proficiency in English, as well as Spanish and/or Portuguese; prior experience and demonstrated success in teaching at the university level in the U.S.; documented grant writing and reporting experience; at least two years’ experience in program administration and/or organizational development, including supervision of employees; excellent oral and communicative skills; successful candidates must also be able to communicate and collaborate effectively with diverse audiences.
