The Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy seeks an exceptional colleague to join the research and international programs department at the first school of its kind.

Summary of the position:

The Visiting Associate will develop all aspects of the research for the annual Giving USA report on philanthropy for the United States, including data collection, analysis, writing, proofreading, review, and interpretation. Implement enhancements to Giving USA as determined by the sponsor and the Giving USA Advisory Council on Methodology (external). Coordinate content of the report’s chapters with the sponsor and the Editorial Review Board. Prepare up to three reports on varied topics selected by the sponsors during the year. Assist with fundraising to support the work of the project. Will also cultivate, build, and maintain relationships with new partners to expand and support the school’s mission of research and education.
Write or edit interpretative material presenting research findings, putting them into the overall context of philanthropic activity in the year under study and over the course of the history of Giving USA.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Conduct research on other designated projects at the school, requiring a familiarity with quantitative and qualitative social science methodologies, including collecting, analyzing and interpreting quantitative and qualitative data.
• Prepare written reports appropriate for various audiences and purposes.
• Present research findings to the media or in public forums including speaking and training presentations for a variety of different audiences.
• Work with current and prospective clients to identify research objectives and define research projects. Prepare written proposals or concept papers to present prospective funders with options for research, including budgets.
• Will conduct and manage budgeting and reporting for grants and research projects, including serving as point of contact with colleagues across the University who work in these areas.
• Train and manage student employees and volunteer authors.
Located on the campus of Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy builds on the strength of thirty years of research, training and outreach activity. Collaborating closely with the IU School of Public and Environmental Affairs and the IU School of Liberal Arts, among others, the Lilly Family School’s twenty core and over
thirty affiliate faculty members draw on an expansive and collegial community of scholars and practitioners from a multiplicity of disciplines devoted to the serious study of philanthropy.
Degree programs include the PhD, MA, and BA degrees in Philanthropic Studies. The school hosts eight chairs in various areas of philanthropy, a robust executive education arm through The Fund Raising School, the Women’s Philanthropy Institute and the Lake Institute on Faith & Giving. The school’s Research and International Programs Department is known for researching Giving USA and The Philanthropy Panel Study among many other projects.

Qualifications:

Minimum Education: Bachelor’s degree required and Master’s degree preferred.

Minimum Experience: A minimum of two years’ experience in nonprofits, fundraising, education or social science research, or other related field is required.

Required knowledge, skills, and abilities: Excellent analytical, written and oral communications skills, familiarity with computers and various software applications. Project management skills are a must, and experience working with multiple constituents and stakeholders is preferred.
