Title The Stead Family Chair in International Philanthropy
Appointment Status Tenure Track
Department IUPUI Lilly Family School of Philanthropy
Position Summary

The Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy, located in Indianapolis, seeks a colleague to join the faculty as an endowed chair in the area of international philanthropic studies beginning summer of 2018 or a date to be negotiated. The search begins in July 2017 and will remain open until filled. This is a ten month open rank tenured or tenure-track faculty position.

As a faculty member, The Stead Family Chair holder will provide intellectual leadership to the school and the field through active research and teaching at the graduate and undergraduate levels. The incumbent can be a senior professor with an established record in international philanthropy or an emerging scholar with a promising research agenda. Regardless of the rank, the faculty of the school will look for an excellent scholar who will thrive in our collegial community, engage in building the field of philanthropic studies, and demonstrate an interest in engaging current and future practitioners.

In March 2017, the school brought on the Global Indices of Philanthropy that were previously produced at Hudson Institute. Relying on a global network of scholars and analysts, we anticipate a range of useful international collaborations to develop in tandem with the evolution of the indices. Half of our PhD students, and about ten percent of our masters are typically international students. Indiana University is developing a number of gateway offices around the world (Berlin, Beijing, and New Delhi to date, with others in the pipeline) that will provide opportunities to engage international partners with the resources of the school. Our executive education programs have provided training in forty countries. These are some of the international assets that will be available to the Stead Family Chair.

IUPUI is the home of the IU Lilly Family School of Philanthropy, which collaborates closely with the IU School of Liberal Arts, the IU School of Public and Environmental Affairs (SPEA), and the new IU School of Global and International Studies. The School has 20 core faculty and an additional 46 affiliate and adjunct faculty from 21 disciplines on the IUPUI and IU Bloomington campuses, all with current, active teaching and research interests in philanthropic, nonprofit and civil society studies. The School offers the Ph.D., M.A. (in-person, in executive format and online), and baccalaureate degrees in philanthropic studies and collaborates with SPEA and other schools at IU offer joint masters degrees.

IUPUI is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Institution M/F/D. IUPUI is an urban-located research campus with an international reputation for its leadership in community engagement. With a concentration in the health sciences, it confers more professional degrees than any other campus in Indiana and is one of the state’s two leading institutions for externally funded research. Valuing candidates who have experience working with students from diverse backgrounds and a demonstrated commitment to improving the conditions in higher education for under-represented students, the School encourages candidates from under-represented groups to apply.

The search will remain open until the position is filled. Candidates are expected to review the School’s website and faculty roster for insights into the interdisciplinary nature of philanthropic studies and the ways in which many disciplines contribute to an understanding of philanthropy, civil society, and nonprofit organizations worldwide.
