Title Associate/Professor of Medicine
Specific Title Associate Director, Indiana Center for Musculoskeletal Health
Appointment Type Open
Department IUSM - Medicine - Rheumatology
Campus IU School of Medicine Indianapolis
Position Summary

The Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM) seeks a physician-scientist to serve as the Associate Director of the Indiana Center for Musculoskeletal Health (ICMH). The successful candidate should have a strong background in musculoskeletal basic, translational, and/or clinical research. Experience in muscle pathophysiology is preferred, but other musculoskeletal or neuromuscular disciplines will also be considered. She/he will work closely with the Executive Director to build collaborations and teams, and together they will establish directions for the center, including strategic plans for musculoskeletal clinical/translational research and recruiting new faculty. Candidates should hold an MD or MD/PhD degree, and have a strong, active research program.
The musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) group at IUSM has grown over the past 20 years and currently includes over 50 investigators, distributed over the Schools of Medicine, Engineering & Technology, Science, Dentistry, and Health & Rehabilitation Sciences. The investigators have over $35 million in extramural funding, a recently awarded T32, and state-of-the-art core facilities. The ICMH capitalizes on its strengths in basic, translational and clinical MSD research by providing facilities and scientific, administrative, fiscal, and technological resources to bring individually successful MSD investigators together in the synchronized pursuit of solutions to musculoskeletal disease. The center serves as a springboard to launch innovative, multidisciplinary, cross-collaborative approaches to the study of musculoskeletal disease. It provides a first class multidisciplinary resource for attracting high-quality recruits to complement the existing strengths of the current investigative teams. Importantly, it serves as the nucleus for collaborative internal and external funding opportunities. Currently the center already studies and treats a wide range of MSD and ultimately, it is planned that the center will achieve a national and international “destination” status for MSD patients seeking innovative therapies and cutting-edge treatment.
Indiana is ranked among the top five states for both the total number of life science jobs (over 55,000) and the number of life science companies (over 2,000). Bioscience products comprise one-third of Indiana exports and contribute more than $50 billion in annual revenue to Indiana’s economy. Northern Indiana has the largest and most concentrated orthopaedic medical device cluster in the world. It is second only to California in the production of medical devices and captures one-third ($38 billion) of the global orthopaedic market. Indianapolis-based Eli Lilly & Company has one of the world’s most robust and successful drug programs for osteoporosis. Cook Biotech, located in West Lafayette, is a world leader in connective tissue engineering and has thriving research programs and product lines in ligament, tendon, and bone repair and regeneration. Roche Diagnostics, located in Indianapolis, has an active program in bone turnover biomarker discovery and validation, and is one of the leading partners in the National Bone Health Alliance’s (NBHA) bone biomarker standardization program. ICMH has established partnerships and collaborations with each of these industrial entities. These efforts are led by the ICMH and are initiated in collaboration with other programs relevant to musculoskeletal research, including those at Purdue University, with intent to seek funding from industry, federal agencies (e.g., AHRQ, DOD, NIH, NSF), and other institutes (e.g., PCORI).

Basic Qualifications

The successful candidate should have experience in fostering scientific collaboration to promote research addressing unmet treatment needs in MSD. The Associate Director position offers a very competitive package through the Physician Scientist Initiative (http://cancer.iu.edu/news-publications/article.shtml?id=3135) and the ICMH, creation of additional faculty positions by recruitment efforts of the Associate Director, and the commitment to protected time for research and ICMH administration.
