Position Summary

The Jacobs School of Music seeks a dynamic musician and conductor to lead the choral ensemble The Singing Hoosiers and to teach courses in the Choral Conducting and/or Music Education departments. The Singing Hoosiers serve as ambassadors for the Indiana University Alumni Association, regularly touring throughout Indiana in addition to presenting significant performances at the Jacobs School of Music and on the IU Bloomington campus. Their repertoire features a wide range of popular music including works from the Great American Songbook, musical theater, vocal jazz, and from the classical repertoire as well. The successful candidate will be able to inspire gifted young singers from a wide variety of disciplines across the IU Bloomington campus as well as the Jacobs School. Both senior and accomplished junior applicants will be considered.
Program, produce and conduct Singing Hoosiers concerts on the IU Bloomington campus and on tours throughout the state; compose and/or commission high-quality choral arrangements in variety of popular music styles; engage choreographers, stage directors, and technical support staff as needed; recruit and train combo/horn players; serve as Choral Department liaison to the Music Education Department; organize tours; and work closely with the IU Alumni Association and the Singing Hoosiers Alumni Association. Teach courses in subjects such as undergraduate choral conducting, choral methods, musical production, and/or other courses based on the qualifications of the candidate and the needs of the School. Mentor choral conducting and music education majors and participate actively in state, regional, and national choral conducting and/or music education organizations. Participation in doctoral committees, school-wide committees, and in department service and recruitment activities, is expected.

Basic Qualifications

D.M.A or Ph.D. in choral conducting or music education required; equivalent professional experience will be given equal consideration. Successful high school teaching experience desirable. Senior applicants: established national/international reputation as an outstanding choral conductor and music educator. Junior applicants: emerging national reputation and accomplishments as an excellent choral conductor and music educator. The successful candidate will have a proven record and demonstrated success in choral performance of a variety of popular music genres. The committee seeks conductors with high artistic goals and an awareness of current trends in choral performance and teaching. The ability to work collaboratively in a multi-faceted and exceptionally active choral program and school of music is required.

Salary and Rank Commensurate with qualifications and experience. The committee will consider both junior and senior applications for appointment at the level of assistant, associate, or full professor.
